Rotary Engine Rebuilds

Rebuilding a rotary engine is in my opinion far simpler than rebuilding a piston engine once you understand the goals of the rebuild.
Due to the exhaustive material which is available on the subject, as to not get dragged down the rabbit hole, I will provide a few resources which I found helpful in doing my rebuild.
Mazda still produces the vast majority of rotary engine parts new, so their parts catalogs can go a long way in helping you in a pinch.

To help, I’ve added a list of key points, written information, and video information. As a lot of the material is taken from the open internet, please cross reference everything below. I’m not responsible for damage you cause to your engine. If you are in doubt, find a local mentor who can teach you what to watch out for.

Some Key Non-Obvious Points:

  • Oil Control Ring Springs are directional, and must be oriented counter the directional rotation of the engine
  • Side seals will need to be clearance by hand to fit.
  • Side seal springs should face ‘up’ on the outer edges to give edge support to the side seals under load
  • in event of rotor damage, replacement rotors should match factory rotor letter stamp “A”, “B”, “C” “D” for best result if full rebalance will not be performed.
  • End play should be checked, if needed, new dead space collets can be purchased from Mazda.
  • Rx7 and Rx8 Rear Main Seals are not the same.
